Hey Friends! Are you all surviving this winter weather? It hit everywhere this last week with icy roads, frozen pipes, school closures and more. Hopefully you and your loved ones managed to stay safe and warm. The cold got me daydreaming and I went down memory lane to some of our favorite vacation spots. I am so thankful we took that trip to the Bahamas recently, but truth be told I am feeling the need for warm weather already!
This is why NOW is the perfect time to start planning your midwinter or spring break getaway. To plan the perfect trip, the destination is only part of the equation, you also have to take into account who is traveling- and why. Certain locations are breathtaking experiences to soak up with your spouse or significant other, and others are geared for maximum fun for the whole family. And of course there are some locations that give epic “girls getaway” vibes. Whatever type of trip you want to take, I’ve got you covered!
Couples Retreats
Take it from me- a couple’s trip is always a good idea. Escaping together allows you to reconnect and recharge as together. This strengthens your bond, helps you align on your goals and perpectives, and reminds you both of all the reasons you love to be together. Whether its a planned getaway or a spontaneous last-minute weekender, you both deserve to have some fun without family, work, and your other daily commitments to think of. These destinations are no-brainers for relaxation, fun, and of course- romance.
Riviera Maya, Mexico
Riviera Maya is one of my top destinations for a romantic get away. The beaches are beautiful and there is so much to do so you will never get bored. From exploring archeological ruins, to chartered fishing trips, to tequila tasting, there is no shortage of fun. The weather is great in February-April also
The Unico Hotel Riviera Maya is one of my favorite all inclusive hotel options in Riviera Maya. First off, adults only AND all inclusive, need I say more? All inclusive is a great way to travel; it is so convenient not to have to worry about carrying your wallet with you when swimming/enjoying the beach. The location is also perfect. You can enjoy sunbathing, water activities or take a quick adventure over to the Tulum Ruins. Whether you want to take it slow, or experience everything you can, this hotel is perfect for your Riviera Maya couples getaway.
Key Largo, Florida
Key Largo, located just outside of Miami in the Florida Keys, is a beautiful and convenient couples getaway. Tropical paradise without needing to bring your passport? Yes please! Key Largo is also optimal to visit in March, April, and May so its perfect for a mid-winter or spring break trip.
There is something for everyone in Key Largo; some of the world’s best scuba diving, state parks -like the renowned Everglades or Coral Reef State Park, and picturesque warm beaches like one of our fav’s Calusa Beach.
For accommodation I recommend the private Largo Resort which offers 6 private bungalows and one large lodge. Whether it is just the two of you or a group of couples, you will find sanctuary and luxury during your stay.
Destin, Florida
Destin is another wonderful vacation spot in Florida. It is located on the gulf side of the Florida Peninsula. The nearest airport is Fort Walton Beach which is a direct connection to about a dozen airports including ATL, CLT, DCA, DFW, and more. Destin visitors can relax on stunning white beaches or enjoy some of the best golf, shopping, and restaurants that Florida has to offer. And there is no shortage of romantic and fun couples activities. Highlights include chartered fishing trips, parasailing, and wine tasting! If you want a little adventure and romance you can enjoy a sunset cruise in a tiki bar sipping on your favorite vacay drinks.
For luxury accommodations I recommend the Henderson Beach Resort which is super reasonably priced especially considering it boasts a lazy river, spa, and award-winning dining.
Flawless Family Vacations
These family-friendly destinations ideas are tried-and-true, and kid and parent approved! There are only so many years where the kids have time off for Spring Break. This time is priceless, before you know it the kids will be grown and out of the house. It is important to use this time to connect as a family and make life-long memories.
Universal Studios Florida
Can you tell that I like Florida? Something about the tropical vibes combined with convenient flights make it the perfect destination for family travel. Universal Studios in Orlando was one of our very favorite family vacations. For the Harry Potter fan in your family there is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and kids also love Transformers: The Ride 3D, and then of course you can’t forget the classic Men in Black: Alien Attack.
For family friendly luxury accommodations near Universal Studios I recommend the Loews Sapphire Falls Resort. It is perfect both for its proximity to the theme park, but also because it is an attraction of its own. Guests also get the benefit of early entrance to featured areas of Universal Studios so they can beat the crowds and avoid some lines.
Nassau, Bahamas
Nassau in the Bahamas is always at the top of recommendation lists for family vacations. Not only is it one of the most beautiful tropical locations on Earth, but it is also a pretty convenient place to get to. There is so much to do in Nassau that no matter how varied your interests, there will be something for even the pickiest of your kids.
Baha Mar is a gorgeous family friendly resort which we have enjoyed that offers freedom and flexibility for older kids to hang out independently. The resort includes everything you need to have a fabulous vacation. Everything from waterparks, casinos, excursions and 28 dining options (including a Starbucks for you coffee lovers). To get here you want to fly into Nassau and the resort is just a 15 minute ride from the airport.
Kauai, Hawaii
Kauai Is my favorite of all of the Hawaiian islands. Here you can find dramatic beauty combined with quiet tranquility. It is the oldest of the chain of Hawaiian islands so the terrain is a mix of stunning mountains with breathtaking cliffs carved by winding rivers and waterfalls and of course the dense rainforests that Hawaii is known for. Then, there are the beaches themselves, from Poipu beach on the south side of the island to Ke’e’ beach on the northside which is also the start of the stunning Na Pali trail.
For winter/spring trips I recommend visiting the south side of the island, specifically Poipu. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort is a top choice for family trips, and I love that it has a swimmable beach because some of the resorts on this island do not. For activities check out some of our favorites: take a doors off helicopter tour with Jack Harter Helicopter Tours, rent snorkel gear for the week from Snorkel Bob’s, or take a secluded hike to a hidden secluded beach or waterfall.
Girls Trip Inspo
A girls trip is ALWAYS a good idea. The only requirement for this trip is fun and maybe some sun. It’s time to let loose. Here are some of my favorite destinations to escape with the girls!
Scottsdale, Arizona
I love a girls trip to Scottsdale. It’s a central location to meet if you are all coming from different parts of the country. And you cannot beat the weather in February-April.
For places to stay I personally love the Four Seasons or The Phoenician. They both offer luxury resort style stays, gorgeous pools for lounging, and relaxing yet high-end spas. It wouldn’t be a girls trip without shopping so be sure to check out Fashion Square and the Mercantile in Old Town. Another great activity is wine tasting at one of the many award-winning Scottsdale wineries.
Nashville, Tennessee
Music city should be on everyone’s list for a girls trip. It’s certainly on mine! Nashville has so much to offer, whether you want to visit the grand ole’ opry, the country music hall of fame, or experience the nightlife on Broadway. Nashville is known for its street art; don’t miss taking a tour with a professional photographer, your insta followers will thank you!
You can find beautiful murals on almost every corner, but you’ll find the most popular ones at The Gulch and 12 South if you want to venture out on your own be sure not to miss:
-
- What Lifts You Wings: 302 11th Ave S.
-
- Red Lips Mural: 1814 21st Avenue S.
For posh and comfortable accommodations check out the JW Marriott Nashville. Located near Broadway and Music City, the JW Marriot Nashville is the place to see and be seen. You can lounge by the rooftop pool with your girl friends, dine at the prestigious Bourbon Steak by Michael Mina, and take advantage of the spa and 24-hour workout facility.
The Island of Barbados
The Caribbean isn’t just for families or couples, and Barbados is on my list for a future girls trip. The island has exquisite beaches, water activities like snorkeling and surfing, and botanical gardens. And if your girl group is into pop music you can go to Rihanna Drive Monument and visit the pop star’s childhood home.
The Crane Resort in St Philip is the perfect place to stay on your girls-only vacation. It is one of the longest operating resorts on the island and it sits on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Crane Beach. The resort also has multiple pool complexes and suites that feature private pools for a truly unique experience. And of course don’t forget the spa and the 6+ award winning restaurants on site.
